The question of the meaning of life is one of the ‘big questions’ of philosophy. The dissertation makes an innovative attempt to bring together the question of meaning with Max Scheler's concept of understanding, thereby gaining an ‘open’ answer to the question of meaning. It makes a contribution to hermeneutic and phenomenological research. To this end, previously unprocessed texts from Scheler's estate are also analysed. At the centre is Scheler's concept of understanding guided by love. The work is aimed at all researchers and students of philosophy and related disciplines, but also at all those interested in the topic of meaning in general.
