Description
In 1988, Umberto Eco published the metapoetic novel Il pendolo di Foucault. This also accompanies Eco's semiotic work in a literary way.
The indicators of postmodernism (defined by Eco in Sulla letteratura) are significant: Metanarrative, dialogicity, double coding and intertextual irony. The semiotic theory of text comprehension (presented in Opera aperta and I limiti dell'interpretazione) is reflected in the plot. Seven characters are used to analyze how the novel works with the persuasive procedures of proximity and distance in order to involve the reader in the interpretative game with texts and reality. These seven characters position themselves differently on the question of interpretation.)
