Never before has the Federal Republic been so divided and polarised as it is in the federal election in 2021. Never before has the party landscape been so and fragmented. Never before have there been so many direct mandates for different parties. Never before have so many parties contested the Bundestag elections - namely 47 with over 6200 candidates.

So is this what Angela Merkel's political legacy looks like? A divided Republic in which large sections of the population no longer communicate with each other and no longer want to want to communicate. The once proud people's parties CDU/CSU and SPD have become degraded to centre parties with a 25 per cent share of the vote. In 1976, they still had a combined share of over 90 of the vote, in 2021 they will have a combined share of 50 per cent. The system of the established people's parties is over and will never return. How did this extraordinary situation come about? Who is profiting from it? What decided the election? And how should this be international comparison?
