From a German perspective, the interpretation of statutes has been analysed in many ways. But what about supreme court judgements? Despite their acute relevance for the practical application of the law, there are hardly any approaches as to how to get from the decided individual case to the cross-case rule.

This work therefore outlines a practical method of interpreting precedents from a German perspective. In particular, the decisions of the German courts of appeal are analysed. Special features of the case law of the Federal Constitutional Court, the ECJ and the ECtHR are taken into account. Many practical examples from German and European labour law and international labour law make the methodological considerations tangible.
