Die letzten NS-Verfahren

In 2015, former SS member Oskar Groening was prosecuted in Luneburg, Germany, as an accessory to the murder of 300,000 people at the Auschwitz extermination camp in 1944. At that time the defendant was 93 years old.

Decades after the fact, the authorities had to tackle legal, historical, and medical problems. They wanted to give survivors of the Shoah and their relatives a chance to address a German court. Both the age of the people involved and the international news coverage had to be taken into account.

In this anthology, participants in the Groening trial offer their views of the case. They are joined by authors from the fields of science, politics, and the media, thus creating a multifaceted image. An effort is made to explain why it took seventy years to convict the “Auschwitz accountant.”
