‘Helping people to love with awareness is the goal I have in mind with this book.’ This is how Hermann Schmitz concludes his phenomenological study, in which he highlights the opportunities, dangers and fragility of love. In light of his New Phenomenology, Schmitz analyses love as a shared situation, filled with an atmosphere, which is a special kind of emotion and is bodily felt. While the situation and atmosphere are shared, the lovers remain radically separated by the subjectivity of this feeling, but at the same time attuned to each other in bodily communication.
