Description
In 2007/08, the Institute of History and the Center for Distance Learning and Continuing Education (ZFW) of the Foundation University of Hildesheim, in cooperation with the Central Institution for Continuing Education (ZEW) of the Leibniz University of Hanover and the municipal archives of Hildesheim and Hanover, organized a series of public lectures on the topic of "The Power of Cities", which ran for three semesters. The series covered a wide range of topics from antiquity to the present. Three questions were of central importance: - What influenced the power and position of a city in its rise and decline? - What events increased the power influence of individual cities or relegated them to mediocrity? - What prospects did(did) the city have as a space of life and power?
This volume was completed under the auspices of the Institute of History at the University of Hildesheim and covers the following topics:
• Cities from Antiquity to the Present
• Hanseatic Cities in Historical and Contemporary Contexts
• Urban Developments from the Middle Ages to Modern Times
• City and Religion
• Hildesheim and Hanover in Comparison
• Metropolitan Cities of Europe
• Cities in Comparison
• Cities in Historical and Contemporary Contexts of Power
• Cities in Historical Memory
The work offers a wide spectrum of regional, national, European, international, and global urban history and thus also addresses a broader reading public.
