Description
This textbook, aimed at political science and social science students, presents the political systems of two of the world’s most stable democracies. From an institutional perspective, Australia, with its federal structure, combines elements of both American and British provenance. In contrast, New Zealand, as a unitary state, was long regarded as the purest expression of Westminster democracy in the world—at least until the introduction of a mixed-member electoral system German style. In twelve chapters, the authors examine the historical and constitutional foundations, the electoral systems, the three branches of government, political parties, the media and civil society, selected policy areas, and current challenges. They also address the similarities and differences between the two systems.
