Description
Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965), doctor, theologian, philosopher and musician, was active as a substitute preacher from 1899 on and later as a professor of Theology in Strassburg. After the completion of his medical studies in 1913, Schweitzer ended his work in Strassburg in order to work as missionary doctor in the tropical hospital in Lambarene (French Congo), which he himself founded. Schweitzer financed this hospital not only through royalties from his publications, but also with organ concerts of Bach’s works. He was a co-editor of Bach’s organ works and is considered a reformer of organ building.
As a theologian, he concentrated his attention on the significance of Communion and research on Jesus’ life. Among Schweitzers philosophical works, his study of Kant’s religious philosophy holds a special place because of its strictly philosphical character. With marked clarity Schweitzer not only portays and criticallyreviews the different models ans essays of Kant’s religious philosophy, from his “Critique of Pure Reason” to his “Religion within the Boundaries of Pure Reason”; by examining the sources he also undertakes to determine the relative chronology of individual parts. Schweitzers book remains a significant contribution to Kant criticism.
