The Soul in the Age of Artificial Intelligence describes the drama of our current misunderstanding of ourselves. Human thinking is essentially a dialogue with oneself, and the currently touted capabilities of large language models mimic the human dialogue almost perfectly. As a result, artificial intelligence is attributed with characteristics that are genuinely human. However, this only succeeds because people project their own characteristics onto the machine and thus „bring it to life”. The unstoppable development of AI requires an anthropological and philosophical analysis of the technology that keeps pace with it. Then the machine can be an appeal to humans to learn to understand themselves anew—an appeal to their natural intelligence and ability to form friendship through dialogue.
