A history of law of the Prussian state and its legal relations to the churches since the late 18th century: Considering this background the treaties of Prussia and its churches 1929 and 1931 are by no means accidental. They were the culmination of a development towards greater freedom and independence from the state, which in part contradicted the processes in the Reich, the Federation and other German states. It did not follow an immovable ideal of the relationship between state and church, but was always a pragmatic reaction to real political problems. The treaties themselves are shaping further developments in East and West and the reunified Germany until today.
