Andreas Weber (1718-1781) taught philosophy in Halle, then from 1750 until 1769 in Göttingen, and finally in Kiel, where he held the chair of logic and mathematics. His published works are mainly concerned with theological topics. His principal work, reissued here in facsimile, is an important example of the influence of Wolff’s philosophy on Protestant theology in the Enlightenment period. It is of outstanding significance in understanding the implications of Wolff’s thought. In his preface to the first volume, Weber writes: “Especially to those who have exercised their understanding through study, this conviction of the harmony of Grace and Nature is indispensable. Such men are accustomed not to accept a thing on good faith. They demand reasons for that which they can accept and fix in their minds. They therefore wish to be convinced that Grace is a true medium and one in accordance with its nature if they are to comprehend it and hold fast to it as the means to their comfort.”
