The promotional effect of the signature of a famous artist on a work of art can be exploited by art forgers as well as by artists who make use of their own assistants and external production facilities in constellations similar to ghostwriting. To take account of this commercial significance of the "right to sign", a pecuniary component can be established for the author's moral right, as it has been done for the general right of personality. Drawing on an art historical approach to the subject, contractual possibilities for shaping the right to sign as well as tort measures against forgers are analysed.
