Description
How did people in the early modern period perceive geographical spaces? How did they organise and describe them, and what did boundaries mean? And what role did natural features play?
Martin Berthold approaches these questions on the basis of the diaries of Christian II of Anhalt-Bernburg. On the basis of the linguistic usage found, he sketches a spectrum of meanings for key words such as land and territory, as well as for natural phenomena such as rivers. The author relates the constructs of meaning to each other, showing parallel structures and hierarchical dependencies, and finally compares them with the modern view of space.
