Empathic monkeys, friendship with dogs, complete identification with a hawk – in research, animal rights movements, autobiographies and fictional texts, the boundaries between humans and animals are increasingly disappearing or are even being called into question altogether. This book is a philosophical contribution to this debate and argues that the "glass wall" between humans and animals can never be completely overcome. Using selected texts from a wide range of fields such as animal research, animal philosophy and literature, it offers a nuanced look at questions of anthropological difference, sheds light on the problems of research settings and discusses current approaches to animal ethics, including zoopolis.
