Description
Animal gifts have shaped diplomacy since time immemorial: from Caesar's giraffe, Charlemagne's elephant and Pope Leo's rhinoceros, to Churchill's platypus, Nixon's pandas and Kohl's Komodo dragon. Until now, the empirical richness of this universal practice has remained unexplored. In this book, Kirchens develops an innovative classification system of diplomatic animal gifts at the interface of history, sociology and political science. Drawing on Marcel Mauss and diplomatic practice theory, the work fills a key gap in diplomatic studies. Drawing on a broad range of case studies, Kirchens illustrates the rationality and effectiveness of diplomatic animal gifts from antiquity to the present.
