In the final phase of the Cold War, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Hungarian People's Republic established a German guest teacher program at Hungarian schools. From 1987 to 2002, a total of 296 German teachers were deployed to Hungary. The presented study of the program based on historical sources makes a contribution to transformation research, to transnational diffusion research in the field of pedagogical norms and values, and to the analysis of cultural diplomacy. It offers insight into the way in which the modernization discourse and the national identity discourse have been conducted in the field of language policy in Hungary since the regime change.
