Doing Realism

The focus of this volume is on realism not as a fixed quality, but as the product of practices actively produced in the interaction between players and developers. Relying on the empirical case of the football simulation 'Football Manager', David Kempf works out the epistemologically demanding and ‘Weltzugang’ creating content of the practices examined. In addition, the ethnography distinguishes itself from the discourse of game studies, which it criticizes as blind to the empirical complexity of gaming practices due to its textualism and omnipresence of supposedly critical claims.
