Description
Leo Justinus Kauffmann was at the height of his creative powers when he was killed in an Allied air raid on Strasbourg in 1944. Subject to Nazi reprisals because of his Jewish wife and forced out of his job as a piano teacher, Kauffmann had to earn much of his living by composing light music for the Reichsrundfunk. In addition, the versatile composer served all common musical genres, from art song to opera. This study reconstructs Kauffmann's life story for the first time by analysing all available archival material. Analyses of his works and a catalogue of his works complete the biography of this bicultural composer.
