The jurisprudence of commercial and merchant courts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries provides a complex approach to the understanding of fair pay in the development of labour law. Anne Allstadt examines how the idea of justice was reflected and implemented in practice within the legal discourse of these courts. Using printed sources and previously untapped archive material, she reconstructs the dynamics between legal norms, customs and social change. Industry-specific disputes illustrate the characteristics of individual economic sectors, while jurisprudence in the context of social crises reveals legal adaptation mechanisms.
