Research into processes of social change, the sociology of countries in the Global South and the structures of development policy refute the simple idea of the modernisation of ‘traditional societies’. In fact, there are many different processes of change and different forms of modernisation. Theories of European origin can therefore not simply be applied to the societies of the non-European world. This textbook provides students and teachers of sociology, social science and regional sciences with access to social diversity in the global world, to the challenges of development policy and to current debates, methods and concepts of development research.
