Description
Agriculture and the climate need stronger constitutional protection. Agriculture differs from all other economic sectors in that it ensures the physiological subsistence level of human beings in a society based on the division of labour. This exceptional public interest justifies and requires special state protection. This protection in the Basic Law is not sufficient to meet the current challenges. A comparison with other European constitutions in particular illustrates this deficit. It is proposed that the German Constitution be amended to include the state objective of "protecting the agricultural structure" and a special legislative procedure for climate protection.
