(Kathi Flau, Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung, 13.05.2015) Narrated world heritage: To make the world heritage sites speak and to let the people who moved in them have their say, that is the aim of this volume about St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Michael's Monastery in Hildesheim. A colourful impression of the life that took place in these places is created through partly still unknown chronicles, legends, anecdotes, not least also court records. It is precisely the seemingly everyday documents and not infrequently the testimonies of lesser people that often provide revealing insights from simple everyday life to high politics. The two buildings with their treasures form a coherent, not only sacred space in the centre of a city that looks back on twelve centuries of history. The political and artistic personality of Bishop Bernward (993-1022) and the monastery church of St. Michael associated with him, which set the trend for the early Romanesque era, had a supraregional radiance. Bernhard Gallistl, who holds a doctorate in classical philology, has dealt with ancient and medieval art in numerous works. In the present volume, he draws on his experience with the source material as a manuscript librarian of many years at the Hildesheim Cathedral Library.
