Description
In exploring the complex interplay between a corporal, an epistemological-ethical understanding of resistance, and the historical narratives that go along with it, the book bridges areas of inquiry that seldom meet. Resistance acts as a critical frame for bringing Kant's ethics of autonomy, Levinas' thinking on radical otherness, and phenomenological concepts of corporeality into a novel, previously unexplored context.
In addition to central thinkers such as Thomas Hobbes, Immanuel Kant, G.W.F. Hegel and Emmanuel Levinas, the work also links less prominent perspectives, such as Franz Rosenzweig's understanding of resistance. His ‘new thinking’ – with his emphasis on singularity (as opposed to idealistic totality) and his radical openness to the future – sheds new light on the trajectory of Levinas philosophical development, and brings Levinas' ethics of alterity and Rosenzweig's critique of political totalization in a fruitful dialogue.
