Description
In the EU’s Member States, the influence of the single market has made a decisive contribution to sport losing its right to act independently of the constitution using its own rules and regulations, the clearest example of which is the so-called Bosman ruling. At the same time, however, the initiatives and interventions of EU institutions plus the fact that sport was embedded into the Treaty of Lisbon have given sport a great deal of impetus on a European level. Against this backdrop, a growing number of people involved in sports have begun to take a keener interest in policymaking in Brussels, while at the same time an increasing number of conflicts of interest have emerged in sport.
This book not only provides an overview of the most important stages in the development of European sports policy, but also examines the key problem areas and figures involved in it. In addition, it highlights academic approaches to and analytical perspectives on Europe’s policy on sport.
