Description
This volume examines the structurally parallel texts of 1 and 2 Thessalonians from an eschatological perspective. This helps a better understanding of the literary relationship of the two letters and to prove 1 Thessalonians as a pre-text of 2 Thessalonians. A dense structure of connections between corresponding sections becomes visible and enables new approaches to the intention of the author of 2 Thessalonians.
Among the motifs whose contemporary and religio-historical background is examined, the Eleusinian Mysteries are particularly mentioned. Not least from the connotations of "anti-god" and "adversary", Dagenbach concludes a composition between 66 and 70 AD – uncommonly early for a pseudepigraph.
