Description
The essays in this volume have their origins in a symposium on “Mendelssohn Reception in the 20th Century” and the lecture series “The Music of Felix Mendelssohn” at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Rostock. The focus is not so much on a comprehensive study of Mendelssohn reception in the 20th century but rather on hitherto largely overlooked aspects of the reception of Mendelssohn’s music. Analytical essays on melody and compositional style and on compositional Bach reception and choral music are complemented by studies of the relationship between Judaism and Christianity in Mendelssohn’s oratorios, Richard Strauss’s attitude to Mendelssohn, and Mendelsohn reception in France and the GDR.
