Description
A movie’s atmosphere is what makes the viewers look beyond its pictures, allowing them to immerse themselves in the cinematic world. It is universally perceptible, yet it is not easy to grasp and unravel in theoretical discussion. Based on the extremely sensual and atmospheric films of the American auteur Terrence Malick, this volume shows how the phenomenon of cinematic atmosphere can be specified and translated into an analysis. In doing so, it presents the first examination of Malick's works from the field of film studies with an explicit focus on their atmospheric aesthetic effects. Using interdisciplinary research, the author profoundly fuses approaches from such disciplines as philosophy, aesthetics, emotional and cognitive research, film phenomenology, film narration and film stylistics, and, after critically reflecting on them, applies them effectively in her analyses of specific films.
