The textbook provides a comprehensive overview of refugee migration to Europe and political and societal reactions to refugee arrivals. It starts from a reconstruction of historical refugee movements from and to Europe and the development of a Common European Asylum System. Selected country examples are used to illustrate how national asylum policies and reception infrastructures reacted to the refugee arrivals since 2015. It discusses perceptions and reactions of the host society and uses multidisciplinary approaches to analyse and explain reactions ranging between civic engagement and xenophobic hostility.
