Description
In October 2012, François Hollande ruled out the deployment of French ground troops in Mali only to then declare full-blown war on the country in the name of the fight against terrorism in January 2013. France received international approval for this turnaround in policy and political support in rebuilding Mali.

This multilingual anthology examines the reasons for France reversing its decision and considers its political interests and strategic thinking in making it. In a wider context, the studies published here investigate how military action can contribute to settling internal conflicts in Africa. The authors address the questions of how the violence was caused by the simmering conflict involving the ethnic groups in the north of Mali and whether the current political solutions are viable. They analyse the benefits offered and risks posed by French and European involvement in Mali from both a political and ethical perspective.
