This study, divided into three Chapters, is aimed at introducing its readers to public international financial law, laying particular emphasis on one of its branches, public international banking law.
Chapter One offers an introduction to the functions and infrastructures of the financial system as the basis for public international financial law, as well as an analysis of the objectives behind the financial system’s regulation.
Chapter Two presents:
•a definition of public international financial law, its delimitation vis-à-vis other branches of public international law, as well as an overview of its branches,
•a brief history of its institutions,
•the four levels of its adoption and enforcement, which is the conceptual approach to this branch of public international economic law proposed by the author, and
•the international fora which adopt international financial standards.
Finally, Chapter Three contains:
•an overview of the main sources of public international financial law, and
•the provisions pertaining to the two main blocks of sources of public international banking law, including the ‘Basel III’ provisions of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.
The study is mainly addressed to legal practitioners. The author is Associate Professor of International Economic Law at Panteion University of Athens, as well as Visiting Professor at Saarland University’s Europa Institute. Since 2000, he is Secretary General of the Hellenic Bank Association.
