Description
Do women murder differently? Or do they investigate differently from their male literary counterparts? These are just some of the questions that this essay addresses when it examines gender aspects in contemporary English-language crime fiction, questioning traditional conceptions of female characters.
After a literary and genre-historical contextualization of the gender discourse, the focus is on works from less researched crime literatures such as India, South Africa, Ireland and Scotland. The potential of female authors for rewriting female contexts shows that modern women's crime fiction can no longer be squeezed into conventional patterns and that it is worth looking for innovation beyond "the usual suspects".
