Details
The three Baltic states Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have come a long way in their rapprochement with the Euro-Atlantic community since they regained independence in 1991. On their long journey »back to Europe« which is full of hitches, German and American policies towards the three Republics play a central role since both countries have to be regarded as principal actors in the enlargement process of EU and NATO.
The volume brings together high-ranking officials from the three Baltic states, Germany, the United States EU and NATO, as well as academic experts from these countries and Russia. The various contributions provide an interesting insight into the motives and interests of Germany and the United States in the processes of EU and NATO enlargement towards the Baltic states. In addition, they provide for a comprehensive overview of the progress made by Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on their way »back to Europe«.
Sven Arnswald is Research Fellow at the Institut für Europäische Politik (IEP) in Bonn. Dr. Marcus Wenig is working at the Ministry of Justice and European Affairs of the Land Brandenburg.
