Description
Hermann Schelenz (1848 to 1922) was one of the most important historians of pharmacy of his time. In 1904, he published his "History of Pharmacy," which was the first of its kind to claim to be a comprehensive account. Since the universities at that time almost completely neglected pharmacy as a field of research, the author made it his task to provide pharmacy with a scientific basis through his monograph.
The work is divided into different time periods that illuminate the development of pharmacy. Other aspects such as the historical social conditions, legal views and religious views of peoples are embedded in this chronological framework. In addition, pharmaceutical legislation, the commercial conditions of pharmacists and the components of the medicinal treasure are presented in detail.
Despite its scientific pretensions, Schelenz's work is aimed at a broader readership. It is brilliantly written and, as a kind of guide, contains much worth knowing about pharmacy.
