People often speak of public debate coming to an abrupt end as a result of digitalisation. Moreover, journalism finds itself in the grip of a deep crisis of confidence. The digital revolution has increased the danger of our society becoming bereft of appropriate discourse. To what extent can journalism fulfil its function of triggering and conducting public and social debate under such changing conditions? The contributions in this book examine the future of journalism from a variety of perspectives, concentrating on the question of what would happen if society was robbed of its chance to engage in critical and fair discourse which is presided over by an independent form of journalism.
