Description
What role does moral normativity play in Aristotle’s happiness-oriented ethics? This book develops a new interpretation of Aristotelian ethics through the concept of “eudemonistic constitutivism.” It demonstrates that the Good should not be understood as an objectively given goal, but rather is constituted through the exercise of rational practice. At the same time, it is argued that Aristotle cannot be interpreted either as a moral particularist or as an advocate of a purely subjective pursuit of happiness. Rather, the rational agent combines the pursuit of individual happiness with moral norms. The study thus contributes both to Aristotelian scholarship and to the current metaethical debate on moral normativity.
