Description
To this day, Roma people are among the most discriminated-against minorities in Europe. Their equal participation in German society is increasingly falling behind in the face of societal crises. In ‘Grenzen der Teilhabe’ (‘Limits of Participation’), Maria Klessmann examines interactive participation processes using the example of the European initiative ‘Mediation for Roma’ (ROMED). The conversation-analytical study follows individuals within the school system and city society and shows how Romani mediators can promote local participation. At the same time, it highlights how one-sided ideas of integration, asymmetrical conversational roles, and language barriers reduce opportunities for participation.
