The Roman Empire was one of the most powerful global empires of antiquity. Yet how was it possible to supply the population in the provinces, far from the capital of Rome? In addition to well-functioning transport routes, this required numerous local production sites for food as well as everyday utilitarian goods.
The authors of this book are distinguished experts in the history and archaeology of the Roman provinces. In their contributions, they explain selected examples of Roman infrastructure, such as the road network, water supply, craftsmanship, and agriculture, including the cultivation of useful crops in private contexts. The primary focus is on the Roman province of Raetia.
