Health resorts are becoming increasingly popular. While retreats, spas, and wellness treatments have recently become part of neoliberal self-optimization, literature has always been concerned with these spaces of healing. Sanatoriums, asylums, and health resorts are popular settings in literary texts, raising questions about actual topographies as well as metaphorical topoi of healing. This volume examines different forms and functions of healing spaces: from 19th-century health resorts and sanatoriums to desolate post-war asylums and modern 21st-century clinics, the papers explore a literary panorama of the sociocultural and aesthetic localization of illness and healing.
