Artificial intelligence is a technology that enables users to access the current state of knowledge stored on the internet. But that is not all. Chatbots such as ChatGPT also disseminate opinions and attitudes that reflect a pre-programmed moral approach to this knowledge. One example of this is the topic of politeness. An important socio-political and social factor becomes apparent in AI-generated texts: polite behaviour – which generally helps to minimise conflict and contributes to cultural understanding – is desirable. On the other hand, it becomes clear that, within the context of AI, politeness is understood as a pre-programmed and embedded form of communication style.
