Zwei Philosophen und Mystiker, die wesentlich zur Ausarbeitung der Theologie und Mystik des Sufismus beigetragen haben, sind Abū Alī al-Husain ibn Abdullāh ibn Sīnā (980–1037), genannt Avicenna, und Ṣadr ad-Dīn ašŠīrāzī, bekannt als Mullā Ṣadrā (1572–1640). Letzterer entwickelt sein theologisches Denken u.a. im Dialog mit der Philosophie Avicennas und führt die von diesem begonnene Tradition, griechisches und islamisches Denken zusammenzubringen, auf eigene Weise innovativ fort.
