Description
Is cancel culture damaging the political sphere in liberal and democratic societies? In this book, Alisa Lang uses case studies to examine the mechanisms of cancel culture and its influence on public discourse. From the perspective of communication theory, she shows the (secondary) consequences of identity politics activism for the democratic public sphere. To identify its mechanisms, she draws on theories of publicity from Carl Schmitt to Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann and Chantal Mouffe. On this basis, she reflects on the effects of this socio-discursive practice on the public climate of opinion, democratic discourse and the narrowing of the corridor of opinion.
