Galen’s numerous, often extensive quotations from Plato are the subject of this monograph. They are collected here for the first time, organized chronologically and by the genre of the works in which they appear. Four case studies demonstrate their significance for the transmission of Plato’s text, for Galen’s Platonism, and for his working methods. Taken together, these aspects yield far-reaching results, enabling the identification of previously overlooked Platonic parallels, the determination of the sources used by Galen, and a more precise assessment of their text. Overall, the evidence reveals a shift in Galen’s use of Plato’s text over time, illuminating an important chapter of his intellectual biography.
