Diotima. Studies in Greek Philology
Description
This volume offers a completely new contribution to the interpretation of the Greek novel: analysing the reception of Plato's poetics and narrative practice. The Greek novel is a crossroads of literary genres: The result is sophisticated allusions to texts that mostly served as models. Platonic dialogue also finds a fruitful afterlife in this framework, e.g. for the theory of mimesis, for dramatic structures, for the reflection on eros, which is developed in particular in the Phaedrus and the Symposium, and for the practice of eikos. The analysis is preceded by a brief look at the results of the ancient exegesis of the Platonic corpus, whereby dialogue emerges as a paradigm of literary production.
