Religious education in this country is taught in accordance with the principles of the religious communities. This has been required by constitutional law for more than a century.
This constitutional consistency contrasts with an extremely diverse and dynamic constitutional reality in the form of state school laws, administrative regulations, and curricula.
But can religious education also be consistent with the principles of multiple religious communities in the sense required by constitutional law? How far does the flexibility of constitutional law extend in light of this constitutional reality? And does the thesis that this is possible reconcile with the Federal Constitutional Court’s 1987 'landmark decision' on religious education?
