The results of model analyses of stability implications of fundamental foreign policy orientations in multistate systems, and of the interplay between the build-up of military power and economic strength from the basis for a discussion on sources of conflict and instability in post-Cold War Europe. Then, new analytical approaches for crisis management and for the assessment of conventional and nuclear stability of multipolar international systems are discussed and illustrated by means of current examples. The book concludes by examining the experience with multilateral arms control, and by proposing a theory of verification.
