Economic corruption impairs free competition, jeopardizes social prosperity, and can lead to the erosion of constitutional structures. Since the 1990s, the business activities of internationally operating companies have therefore come under particular scrutiny. Based on in-depth interviews with experts, the author examines how companies deal with the multitude of national anti-corruption regulations that apply to them in parallel, some of which diverge considerably, and what dysfunctional consequences their solution strategies for the effective prevention of economic corruption sometimes entail.
