Details
The democratic constitutional states of today, the product of a historical struggle with manifold forms of foreign domination, abuse of power and arbitrary rule, are faced with a multitude of dictatorial regimes on a global scale. However, extremist forces and movements operating within ‘Western’ democracies also provide proof that principles such as human rights, tolerance and political pluralism are by no means unassailable. Although the programme of political extremism is of existential importance, political and human science research has often avoided it. The Extremism & Democracy Yearbook aims to promote the academic study of this topic, encouraging extremist phenomena to be researched comprehensively and by no means only with regard to the danger they may pose. The editors are committed to the fundamental values and structural elements of democratic constitutional states. However, their defence must not lead to Manichean patterns of interpretation and friend–foe stereotypes. Both extremes, the demonisation of political extremism and the idealisation of constitutional democracy, must be avoided. Political extremism in Germany constitutes the focus of the yearbook. The political developments of the past year should be documented and analysed, just as the editors aim to comprehensively acknowledge any newly published literature. However, the contributions in the yearbook often go beyond the narrower subject area to cover a broad spectrum of perspectives and doctrines. Whilst striving to be academically sound, the yearbook also aims to provide comprehensive information and inspiration for practitioners (politicians, ministry officials, security forces, educators, etc.). This book is intended to be seen as a forum for discussion, a reference work and a guide at the same time.
