Volume 13 of 'the Yearbook of Direct Democracy (2023/2024)' explores current developments, challenges, and potentials of direct democratic procedures in theory and practice. It focuses on transparency in political financing, populist communication in referendum contexts, and informal, non-binding referendums without legal basis. The role of direct democracy in reform processes is also examined.

A documentation section provides an overview of procedures in the German federal states and selected international votes in 2023 and 2024. Country reports on Germany, Austria, and Switzerland cover referendums, implementation of instruments, and national votes. The volume also includes a review of relevant case law and recent academic publications.
