‘Education’ and ‘liberalism’ are closely related. From a liberal perspective, education is a crucial
medium for individual advancement. Consequently, political liberalism understood its educational ideals as a comprehensive promise of emancipation, the implementation of which touches on central questions of distribution of power, justice and equality. The ten contributions in this thematic section analyse the theoretical approach and political practice of liberal educational concepts from the Enlightenment and Wilhelm von Humboldt to the Federal Republic of Germany.
